Specimen Number4-8-008Alternate NumberM-8CommentsPhyllically altered, supergene-enriched Precambrian granite. Granite is equigranular, and has been altered to quartz + sericite + pyrite, the typical phyllic assemblage for which Morenci is reknowned. Strong supergene enrichment, with coatings of chalcocite on both veinlet and disseminated pyrite. Quartz + pyrite veinlets are abundant and provide reactive surfaces for supergene enrichment. Minor hypogene sericite can be discerned in the larger veinlets. Minor limonite staining, some brochantite oxidation after chalcocite, and some porcelanic jarosite also noted. Grade runs 0.7 to 0.9% Cu and 0.1% Mo, and this was the mainstay of production at Morenci. In Teaching CollectionNoMineral(s)feldsparpyritequartzsericiteRock NamegraniteDistrictCopper MountainMineMorenciExternal LinkMindatGeo-LocationundefinedSub-LocationundefinedDeposit TypePorphyry CopperGeo-Coords[1] Reference MaterialACL-173: Anzalone, S.A., Beane, R.E., Davis, S.R., Graybeal, F.T., Guilbert, J.M., Oakley, C.A., Titley, S.R., and West, R.M., org., 1979, Society of Economic Geology Field Conference on Tucson-Area Porphyry Copper Deposits, Tucson, AZ, May 3-6, 1979, 205 p.
