DescriptionThe specimens in this collection represent a novel blend of biodiversity discovery. Dr. Roberto Carrera-Martínez, Dr. Hiroshi Ikeda, and Dr. Mac Callaham, with other collaborators, collected earthworms from stream banks throughout the eastern United States. This habitat - often considered 'aquatic' by terrestrial ecologists and 'terrestrial' by stream ecologists - is where the earthworm family Sparganophilidae thrives. Their collections, followed by DNA barcoding and meticulous morphological examination, led to many new species being described and a total donation of over 1200 new specimens from North America and Puerto Rico.
